Betlc^.

Betley is a parish of S40 inhabitants, four niik-s from Crewe and seven from Newcastle-under-Lynie. It is a vicarage but was originally a Chapel of Ease under Audley. It is said to have been served from Trenthara (Qy. Hulton) Abbey till the Reformation. The Church is dedicated to St. Margaret, whose feast was the 20th July and is now held, according to the old calendar, on the 31st. In Capper's Topographical Dictionary, 1808, Betley is thus described :

" Betley, a market town and parish in the hundred of Pirehill, Stafford; stands on the borders of Cheshire, 4 miles {sic\ from Newcastle-under-Lime, and 154 from London; containing 138 houses and 670 inhabitants. It is a very pleasant place, having a fine sandy soil, and abounds in numerous gardens, supplying nearly the whole of Newcastle with vegetables In July here is a large Cattle fair. The Market, on Tuesday, is well supplied with all kinds of provisions. It is a curacy."

The first curates recorded by Mr. Landor in his forthcoming volume of "Staffordshire Incumbents, etc.," for the Wm. Salt Archas. Soc, Vol. for 1915, are :—

William Browne must have been responsible for beginning the Parish Register in November, 1538, immediately after it was first ordered by Jhe King and his despotic Minister, Thomas Cromwell. It will be noticed that it is described as the Register of our Lord the King and not as a Church Register. The title is the same at Audley.

Mr. Hugh Tilston transcribed on parchment the whole of what was probably on paper in his time, just as Mr. William Kelsall, the Vicar of Audley, did for his parish. Whoever was responsible for it did not like to commit himself to say who was the I'eigning sovereign after the death of Edward VI. There is no mention of Mary Tudor or Elizabeth. Hugh Tilston is described as ' ' Scholaris ruralis et mediocriter doctus." He was ordained deacon by Bishop William Overton and does not appear to have been a priest in 1593. He was followed by Ralph Eaton, 1602, Roger Barber, 1604, who is mentioned in the Parish Register (p. 47), and in 1620 by Ralph Hulme. This was a notable Puritan divine. Sir Randall Egcrton, who was a Royalist Compounder, was ordered by the Parliament in 1646 to settle £20 p. a. on him. About 1649 seventy parishioners petition for him as one who had been a " painful " (painstaking) " preacher among them for 30 years." In 1640 Ralph Thicknesse, of Balterley, left Mr. Hulme, "Clerk, Minister, and preacher of God's word," a legacy equal to ten guineas of our money to preach the testator's funeral sermon. He was buried in 1653 (see p. 71). He was succeeded by William Cataline. It appears from the Churchwardens' Accounts (see Appendix) that John Kelsall, after- wards Vicar of Audley, was Curate of Betley in 1655. The other clergy

mentioned in the Register are Roger Reynolds, Rector of Stoke-on-Trent, who married Anna Egerton to Thomas Arblaster, of Longdon, in 1588 (sec p. 33), and Mary Egerton to Hersey Wolferstan in 1593 (p. 38), Robert Aston, Rector of Standon, who married Thomas Dale to Joanna Bromley in 1596 (p. 41). Richard Freen, Curate of Tiverton infra, in the parish of Edgmond, co. Salop, married William and Maria Tilston in 1608 (p. 52). John Yapp as Surrogate examined the Register frequently from 1703 onwards. John Edwards, incum- bent of High Offley, is mentioned 1708, the Reverend Mr. Harding, of Wool- stanton, 1724, the Reverend Mr. • Rowlands, curate of Talk, 1736 (p. 153), the Reverend Robert Hill, Rector of St. Mary's, Chester, 1787 (p. 229).

It is somewhat difficult to say from the Register alone which of these were Incumbents of Betley and which were only curates in the sense of deputies. The writer has not been able to verify the list at Lichfield, which would take a considerable time. Mr. Pennington, who died in 1813, was the only one who really neglected the Register. Sir Thomas Fletcher was determined that his son and heir should be propei'ly baptized and registered (see p. 256). It is the fact which the Register confirms that he put considerable pressure on Mr. Penning- ton to come down to Betley Court the same day as the baby was born and stood over him till the registration was completed.

At the Conquest Ormus de Betley held the Manor of Betley, but in the 12th century his son Hugo de Betley sold it to " the great territorial acquisi- tionist of the neighbourhood, Henry de Audley," who built his Castle at Heighley close by.

The surnames in the Register are reminiscent of a long and varied past and are many of them represented in the present. Boughey, Cradock, Dod, Egerton, Hardinge, Shawe, Thicknesse, and Twemlowe all occur in our StalYord- shire records centuries before the Parish Register began and are all known at Betley to-day. Lord Crewe is a landowner in the parish and holds the ruins of the famous Castle of Flelegh whence representatives of all the above names

marched under James Audlcy to Crecy and Calais five hundred and seventy years ago and fought in the very places where EngUshmen from Betley and elsewhere are now showing the same courage in a better cause. At the date when the Register opens the freehold land at Betley was, for the most part, in possession of the Audleys and the Egertons. The Bougheys, Cradocks, Hardinges, Nodens, Shawes, Thicknesses and smaller owners held the rest. Mr. George Flctcher-Twemlow, of Betley Court, has succeeded many of tliese. The Vicar, Sir Robert Boughey, Bart., still preserves the possessions of liis family in Betley and Audley. The writer has to thank him for a fund of informa- tion.

The Egertons are believed to have succeeded the original founders of the Betley Manor and the advowson of the Church also belonged to them in the 1 6th or 17th centuries. All these passed from them by sale to the Toilets, who were originally connected with the Navy, notable people and much beloved.

Mr. Edwards is descended from the Steeles and owns their house at Buddi- leigh. Robert Steele married Margaret Smithe in 1607 (see p. 51) and his initials with the date 1610 are still on the old house which he acquired from the Thick- nesses.

As to the Church itself, there was a special cult of St. Margaret in the 13th and 14th centuries. In an ancient deed of a.d. 1125 an endowment of land is made for ' ' the Blessed Mary of Betley, ' ' and it is possible that the dedication of the Church was changed when the present building was put up at the end of the 14th century. It has wooden arches and pillars on both sides of the nave made of Spanish Chestnut wood and there are magnificent specimens of this tree still in the woods between Betley and Balterley. There is only one other Church like it in England.

The township of Balterley is in the County of Stafford and diocese of Chester, not in the parish of Betley. But it has always had a special connection with the Betley Church. The Thicknesses owned the little Chapel in the North Aisle, surrounded by a 14th century Screen ot Spanish Chestnut, and formerly known as " the Thicknesse Chancel." They were ancient landowners in Betley as well as Balterley. The right to this Chancel now belongs to Mr. Fletcher Twemlow and still goes, as anciently, with Balterley Hall. This house was formerly known as the Manor of Thicknesse and was never part of the Manor of Balterley. It appears that in 1320 William de Thicknes was married in his Oratory in his Manor-house of Thicknes by his own Chaplain.* It is possible that he also even then had a right to the little Chancel in Betley Church. But it is more probable that he largely contributed to the re-building of the Church about 13S2 when he was Custodian of the Royal Castle of Newcastle-under-Lyme. If the Church was then re-dedicated to St. Margaret the little Chancel might have become the Lady Chapel of the Church, as was natural from its situation. However this may be, it was called the Thicknesse Chancel in the Churchwardens' accounts (1704) (see Appendix) and in the Will of Ralph Thicknesse, who died in 1701 and desires to be buried "in the little Chancel in Betley Church which belongs to my house and family."

The Egertons, as Lay Rectors, had rights in the main Chancel of the Church, and there is a beautiful monument to Ralph Egerton and Frances his wife, who died in 1610, which is fully described in the Appendix to this volume. They lived at the fine old Hall of Betley on the road to Crewe. Their eldest daughter Mary was born in 1577, and at the age of 16 was married (p. 38) to Herscy Wol- ferstan, of Staff old, near Tamworth, who took part in Essex's expedition to Cadiz,

where he and Drake singed the King of Spain's beard. Her son Francis, who succeeded to the family estates, was baptized at Bctley, 1612 (see p. 57). The births of her children, with the exception of the first, are all registered at Statfold and Betley. Other notable surnames are to be found in the Register. The burial of Henry Lord Audley is registered 6th February, 1563. This record is also made at Audley and Madeley. It is doubtful where he was really buried. Before the destruction of Hulton Abbey (now part of Burslem), founded in the 12th century by the Audleys, they were all buried there. George Woodde ' ' legis peritus " buried in June, 1558, was one of the Justices of Chester, and is said to have re-built his family mansions at Hall-atte-Wood or Hollywood, in Balterley, now also owned by Mr. Fletchcr-Twemlow. Some historic names appear in the Register borne by humble people. No entry is perhaps more pathetic than the burial on the 25th March, 1709, of Peter Manwaring, " gentleman and pauper."

No trade or profession is mentioned before 1584 as all were probably engaged in agriculture. " Evance servant to my Lord Viscount Hereford " was buried 1571. " Webster " or weaver and " shoomaker " are mentioned, 1584, " hop- man " and " scriptor " (probably scrivener) in 1595. "Yeoman" and "husbandman" are frequent after 1700, also "sawyer," "tanner," and "tynker." In 1702 (see p. 112) they baptized a child of " militis gregarii," whatever that may mean, perhaps only "common soldier." There is also a " Doliator, anglice Cooper," but no Butcher.

The Christian names of women at the beginning of the Register are perhaps rather unexpected. In the first 20 years of the Register, which takes us to the Accession of Queen Elizabeth, there is only one Mary (1548, a wedding). There are 41 Margarets following the dedication of the Church, 33 Joannas, 26 Isabels, 20 Ellens, 18 Agnes's, 11 Alices, 10 Dorotheas, 9 Janes (which was not con- sidered the same as Joanna apparently), 8 Annes, 3 Cecilias, only 2 Katharines, beginning I555- Pctronilla 1539 (a marriage), Eva 1540, Lettice 1542, Ursula 1548, Josefa 1557, and Ambria 1558 have each one. The first baptism of a Mary is in 1577. Two Marys are buried in 1559, probably both born before 1538.

Of men's Christian names occurring in the Register in the first twenty years, John occurs loi times, William 66, Radulphus (pronounced Rawffe or Rafe, not the modern corruption Ralph) 61, Richard 44, Thomas 42, Robert 28, Hugo 18, George 13, Nicholas 8, James 4, Ranulph 3, Humphrey 3, Reginald 2, Peter 2, Roland 2, Henry (1550) 2, Bartholomew, Bernicus (spelt Bemicus, p. 3), Andrew, Stephen (1547), Randulph, Lawrence, Raimund, each one.

The local names not in directories mentioned in the Register are : —

Gorstiehill (1581), p. 28. This is on the road to Crewe and is still so called. Wrynehill (1583), p. 29. This was at one time the Egertons' principal seat, originally spelt Wrymehill. There are two Checkley parishes, one near Betley in Cheshire and another in Shropshire. Bowsiewood (1583), p. 29. This is just under Heleigh Castle on the road to Newcastle. Peele (1586), p. 32, is in the parish of Audley on the Balterley Road. It represents an old Tower or Peele built for protection against the Welsh. The same name and buildings occur on the Northumberland border against the Scots. Blakenhall (1591, p. 36) is a township in Cheshire, two miles from Betley. Knowle (1592, P- 36) is in Audley parish. Daddlespoole, now known as Doddlespool, is on the road to Crewe. Buddileigh is opposite to it. Holley may be Hollywood. Tip green forge is in Wybunbury.

Sneape (1691, p. 99) is Snape, a farm about three miles from Betley, in Cheshire. Greenhunger (1691, p. 99) is perhaps the same as Gravenhunger.

Moss in Cheshire, perhaps Hungery Heathe (1583, p. 29) is the same. Atherley Green (1693, p. 100) is the same as Adderley Green, in the parish of Audley. Hill (1691, p. 102) is the same apparently as Wrinehill. Copnale is perhaps Coppenhall, the ancient parish of Crewe.

Ravenshall or Ramshall is a township between Betley, Audley, and Wrine- hill (p. 100). Craca Moss (p. 103-4) is now called Cracow Moss.

The writer has not been able to identify the following : — Deadmans Dene (1592, p. 37, and 1399, p. 44), Leyfieldes {1600, p. 44), Stadegate {160O, p. 49), Skullshill (1608, p. 52), Karlonde and Tikewene (1621, p. 67), Fladgate (1676, p. 92).

Thicknesse was frequently locally corrupted to Thickens (see 1632, p. 69) and is sometimes spelt Thickwithnies in the early Plea Rolls. Tikewene may be a corruption of this.

On page 71 there is an amusing memorandum about tithes and fees. The smoke money is still paid to the Vicar of Betley (1915), see page 14S.

The Barebones Parliament, so called from the famous Praise-God Bare- bones, passed an Act, as is well known (23rd August, 1653), that no marriage should be legal unless celebrated by a J. P., after three callings at the market cross. A good specimen of this sort of marriage certificate will be found on p. 79, signed by Edward Brett. Edward Eardley (p. 72) was another puritan J. P., of whom there is a portrait at Betley Court, which was brought from Eardley Hall in the parish of Audley.

The Steeple was re-built in 1638 and is mentioned in Churchwardens' accounts (see Appendix).

There are not many out-of-the-way things in the Register. One wonders why Mary Thicknesse, buried in 1559, is the only person in the Register on whose soul God is asked to have mercy, and why Reginald Torkinton, in 1590, is described as one who went to his reward ? " qui freno premeretur." Why William Swennerton and Raphe his " sun " (sic) were described as ' ' bribers " in 1795 (see p. 84). Who was Jonathan More of Rasley More ? Or what was the abuse intended to be heaped on Ottiwell Timmiss (p. 120) although he was dead. And why was John Russell known as Ugly (p. 57). There is nothing either remarkable about the illegitimate births except the use of the term Viciatus, which also occurs at Audley, and is, it is believed, unusual. One vicar regularly records the birth of " anabaptist " children, though they are not baptised (see p. 117).

About the Ottiwells, however, a word must be said. This family name (see pages, 65, 81, 99) comes, the writer believes, from a place between Betley and Audley, now called the Devil's Well. This was a sacred Well, still believed locally to be " good for the eyes," dedicated to St. Ottilia, whose French name Odille has since the Reformation been corrupted into Old de'il; and so the Devil's Well. Ottiha was the daughter of a German King and an ancestress of King Alfred. She was a beautiful girl, but blind and a heathen. She received her sight when baptised by the English Missionary St. Wilfrid (see Baring Gould's Lives of the Celtic and English Saints). There is another Well in the German Black Forest near her convent which is still believed to be " good for the eyes." The Ottiwells were probably guardians of the well. They were hereditary " Masters of the Games," " Ludi Magistri," at Audley (see Parish Register there, 1687, Ap. 12). When pilgrimages ceased they transferred their industry to the public house, now closed, opposite Betley Church, which was kept by the Ottiwell Jollys and Ottiwell Timisis, to within the memory of persons now

living. The local story that the Devil was flying from Beeston Castle to Alsager Bank and dropped a big stone out of his leather apron by mistake, and that there the well sprung up is either a later invention or an older story, perhaps pre-Christian. Anyone can go and see the stone, and all are agreed that the water is good for the eyes.

It will be noticed in the Register and the Churchwardens' accounts (Appen- dix) that it was the custom to bury in the Church, but all bodies were removed about 1841 and many of the bones were broken up and spread on a field, on which nothing has ever grown since, now known as Betley Gorse.

Memorandum. That I was paid 3 halfpence for every lamb under the above thimble number for 2 years & it was looked upon as due to me by them that paid me only. Thos. Richardson of Betley carrier refused to pay me whereupon I sued him at Lichfield some of the parish come and encouraged him unknown to me and they [asked] Mr. Brian Shaw rector of Barthomley to desire me to refer it to 2 clerg3'men which I yielded to. They chose Mr. Shaw of Barthomley, Mr. Jonas rector of Wibunbury. I gone to Mr. Shaw several

times • . . but he was unwilling to

meddle

. . but one day as I was a-going to Barthomley to know his reason why he did not meet some of the parish who made a motion of a conclusion among ourselves because Mr. Shaw went not in favour for them. [It being about a Communion time] to take (as above) for my time and no longer that the succeeding ministers are left to their choice whether to con- tinue my composition or to say what way paid at first when Mr. Shaw led me to infer that he promised they should pay

charges which accordingly
