RLE Graphics Of fer Art/YiInfFormation | by Nore Lehfeldt
In the last couple of issues of "TIMELINEZ’ we have featured articles on decoding and displaying Run-Length-Encoded Graphics on the 2068/Spectrue and the Sinclair GL. For those who may have wondered what all the shouting was about, we present the exaaples on these two pages.
To refresh your aesory: Run Length Encoding is a system of converting a 206 X 192 pixel screen isage into a string of ASCII] characters so that it can be transmitted to and from and displayed by dis-sisilar computers. The file format is a Standard header and footer with a continuous string of pairs of characters in between. In each pair of characters, the CODE of the first represents the nueber of black pixels to be set, and the CODE of the second, the nueber of white pixels to be set.
At first consideration, a 258 X 192 pixel image does not seea likely to provide auch in the way of graphic subtlety.

of 1/2-inch (and sost 3/4-inch) video tape systems, and the practical vertical : resolution liait of NTSC video is something less than the nuaber of displayed lines (485), Of course, in the RLE format there is no Z-axis modulation -- that is, brightness variation -- so the format does contain less information than an analogue video display with the sage number of pixels. All that aside, as you can see from the examples here, suprisingly artistic and subtle effects are possible in the foraat. All of the RLE Graphics presented here are drawn from various sections of

RLE Graphic ® John Lovell there explores the possibility of higher-resolution on-line RLE graphics in the Picture Support Forus future and possible scheees for standardization so that they say be viewed by
owners of disparate cosputers.
Not only is it possible for aeabers of this forum to upload RLE files they fm have created on their own computers, it is also possible to subeit pictures, photgraphs, etc., by mail for digitizing, RLE conversion and subsequent display = in the forus. we
Wayne Scheidt’s exotic evocation of an oriental landscape was created with the Flexidraw light pen system on a Comaodore 44. It is an example of the kind of subtle original work that can be reproduced in the RLE foraat.
John Lovell’s name crops up wherever you look for RLE Graphics on CompuServe because he does the RLE conversions for many artists and forums as § well as in his own Sailing Forum (60 SAILING). He is particular noted for his RLE conversions of space-travel and related subjects, such as this depiction of fe Graphic 8 Doug Quinn the picture postcard from US to THEM placed aboard the Pioneer spacecraft. Images from other sedia -- popular comic strips, TV shows, sovies and the like -- area staple of the display areas of Pictures Support. Rick Gregory’s representation of the Enterprise in planetary orbit is an example.
A relatively new feature of Pictures Support Forua is the Art Gallery section, where the works of a particular artist are featured for a month. The Striking Eyes’ is by Doug Quinn who was the featured artist for August. He has also been named a SYSOP of the forusa.
But RLE graphics is not all pretty Bpictures -- utilitarian purposes are beginning to be served as well.

This is the only exaaple here of a digitized photograph, but there are auch better exaaples to be seen on the systew. Picture Support SYSOP Larry Wood is also up to something new in his Discover Orlando Forua (60 ORL), where he is setting up a Series of electronic travel brochures (’Florida’s Seven Vacation Regians’, RLE-ized by the ubiquitous JL gets its first public display here'). Ultimately it will feature road, transportation and attraction saps, as well as other images designed to aid folks planning a Sunshine State vacation.
In the Broadcast Professional Forua (60 BPFORUM), you can read a description of the ‘Lattice Splitting Pad’, an audio signal combining/splitting circuit of use in Radio/TV/Recording studios. Then, armed with some resistors froa your junk box and this RLE circuit diagram, you can cobble it together and give it a try! John Hoffman, BP Forua SYSOP, thinks this is the first use of RLE graphics to illustrate a technical article.
CompuServe gets the bulk of the credit here because of the shear voluae of

The PUG prisoner project under the direction of Rita Toth continues. At our August {7th aeeeting Nate Schulaan contributed a 1/S 1000 and an uncased full-sized keyboard. Both items have been put in working order by our hardware whiz, Rex Lundgren. We can ship thea off as soon as we get an enclosure for the keyboard. Search your junk box and give Rita a call if you come up with something suitable.
Bob Orrfelt continues his dissection of and corrections to the 2068 ROM. He is also adding a batch of new comsands and utilities. Bob says several sonths sore of work on the new ROM is required. We wait with baited breath.
